Stoke City vs West Ham United Match Preview
Stoke City managed their first premier league victory of the season on Monday when they came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Britannia Stadium. Kenwyne Jones and Robert Huth were the goal scoring heroes for the Potters. Manager Tony Pulis had missed the first half due to the passing away of his mother, but he made it to the stadium by half time to inspire his men to victory. Stoke won both corresponding fixtures with West Ham last season, 0-1 at Upton Park and 2-1 at the Britannia Stadium.
West Ham remain one of only two EPL clubs still winless this season. (Everton is the other.) But they retain the dubious distinction of being the only club without a point, and that places them on the bottom of the league table. Last week the Hammers lost 1-3 to cross town rivals Chelsea at Upton Park. To their credit, however, West Ham became the only team to score against Chelsea this season when Scott Parker lobbed the ball over the head of Petr Cech. The Hammers’ cause in the upcoming fixture isn’t helped by the fact that the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur falls on Saturday; West Ham will be without manager Avram Grant and defender Tal Ben Haim who will both observe the holiday. Grant’s religious convictions may not help his job prospects, as there is speculation that he may get the old heave-ho if West Ham continue to lose.
